Governors

The governors are responsible for governing the school. Most of their work takes place out of school hours, but governors often visit the school and are linked with particular classes and each governor is also linked to a subject.

Governors are here to ensure the school meets its statutory duties, manage the budget and contribute to school improvement – curriculum and premise.  If you would like to speak to a governor please contact the school office.  Letters marked for the attention of a governor will be passed on in confidence.

Mrs Julie Ashley-Wren

I am using my 30 years plus experience as a governor at other schools in Broom Barns.  I taught primary and nursery for over 20 years and as a parent of five and a grandparent I am totally committed to ensuring the best possible opportunities for all children to develop their love of learning.

Mrs Carly Charlton

As a parent and a professional working within the Further Education (FE) sector, I bring my knowledge and experience in funding curriculum design and learning support. In addition, I am an active Safeguarding Officer with a strong understanding of compliance, safeguarding responsibilities, and student welfare.

I am passionate about education and welcome this opportunity to use my skills and experience to support the school community. I hope to contribute fresh ideas, strengthen links between the school and parents, and work collaboratively to help ensure that both the school and its pupils continue to thrive and achieve their full potential.

Mrs Jayne Currant

I am a Primary Years trained teacher and I have taught in both Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and across the primary range. I joined Broom Barns Primary School in January 2011 as Deputy Head and was appointed as Headteacher in September 2015. I feel privileged to be the Headteacher at Broom Barns and I take pride in the achievements of the children. I firmly believe in the school vision and believe that every child should become R.I.C.H. Resilient, Independent, Confident, Happy.

Mrs Jo Lawson

I have lived in Stevenage for as long as I can remember, the daughter of a practice manager within a Stevenage GP practice and a Police Officer within Hertfordshire. My primary education was at Roebuck Primary School, thereafter Stevenage Girls School, North Herts College and the University of Hertfordshire, where I studied Early Years and Education as a specialism. In my working career, I have worked in a Bank, within a Solicitors, where I studied land conveyancing and civil law before raising a family of 3 children, whilst working in a GP Practice. I have managed my own Pre-School for 2-3 years old for 15 years. I then became a Lecturer in Early Years and Childcare in further education using my specialism to teach future teachers and childcare practitioners. I also teach Health and Social Care – future NHS practitioners, nurses, midwives and doctors. I have been Governor within a secondary school for the past 15 years and also a District Chair of Governors for North Herts, where I support and guide other Chairs of Governors and provide a safe space for discussion. My 3 children have completed their education within Stevenage and in their adult lives now work with general education as a Primary School teacher, an Operations Director of Education within the private sector and a School Business Manager.

Mr Jason Martin

As a former student of Broom Barns, with two children that previously attended the school, I felt being a Parent Governor provided me with the ideal opportunity to give something back and support the school in its quest to become an outstanding rated school. Having graduated with an honors degree in Marketing, I relocated to Hong Kong, where I spent 20 years in Marketing & Sales related jobs. I opened two companies in Asia then expanded into Europe, which was the main reason my family and I returned to the UK. I am passionate about primary education and will strive towards providing a platform that allows every pupil at Broom Barns the opportunity to excel to best of their ability. I am very proud to be part of the Broom Barns team.

Mrs Maja O’Sullivan

I was born in Poland, but moved to England to start a new life in Stevenage, where I live with my children.  I have taught in a few schools and managed my own after school club, giving the children the opportunity to relax and have fun after a day at school.  I am a teacher at Broom Barns, currently working in Year 5, teaching the children new skills whilst developing their intellect for their futures.

Mr James Pearce

Broom Barns is already a fantastic school where children are encouraged to learn, grow, and thrive. I have seen this first-hand through my own child’s positive experience at the school and the dedication of its staff.

I am proud to support the existing governing body and contribute to the school’s future success. I hope to bring commitment, enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective, helping to build on the school’s many strengths while supporting continuous improvement. Above all, I am passionate about ensuring that every child has the best possible opportunities to succeed, flourish, and reach their full potential.

Mrs Jackie Phillips

I am a primary year’s trained teacher and I have taught across the primary phases. I joined Broom Barns School in 1999 as a class teacher and was appointed as Deputy Head teacher in December 2015.  I believe that every child, without question, has the potential to succeed and it is our job to strive to create the kind of environment in which all children can realise their full potential.

Mrs Elinor Plater

I moved to Stevenage in 2013, having spent a lot of my childhood here visiting my Grandparents. When I got the chance to, I moved to Stevenage to start a family of my own. I started teaching in 2022 after being in veterinary practice for 10 years. I have a passion for teaching and giving our children the opportunity to grow. I have been a Stevenage Borough Councillor since 2023 and have sat on many committees in that time. Focusing on the local community and how we can improve and help the people within the community has been a big drive for us to do better. There is always room to grow.

Mrs Sarah Shaw

I am a mum of two and a stepmum to one.  I take a great interest in education.  I wanted to be a governor to help make the school even better than it already is for our children and for future children.  My work life is in education, I am a cleaning supervisor in a local school.  My biggest passion is cooking, which I hope to share with the children.
