Classes

Broom Barns School has 8 classes from Nursery to Year 6.  Every class has their own entry in our school information site. Please select the class your child attends for more information.

Nursery

Curriculum Overview

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/596629/EYFS_STATUTORY_FRAMEWORK_2017.pdf) which details the learning and development for your child from birth to age 5.  At Broom Barns Nursery, each child’s development is supported by high standards of early education and care.  It underpins all future learning by supporting and fostering the children’s personal, social and emotional well-being.  It encourages positive attitudes and disposition towards learning in the children and promotes learning through play.  We adapt learning themes and topics, responding to the children’s needs and interests.  Please take a look at our regular “Nursery News” to update you on this years topics.

P.E. is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, however, physical development plays an important part in the new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and so we may have physical development sessions on other days as well.  Please could you ensure that your child has a named P.E. kit for both indoors and outside (red or white shorts, white T-shirt) in school at all times. Please take out any earrings on these days.

Trips etc

In Reception we plan local trips in response to our class topics and the children’s interests. Past trips have included planting bulbs at Town Centre gardens, tasting food and making pizzas at Pizza Express, visiting Hatfield Park Farm and finding the Gruffalo at Wendover Woods. We also have many visitors to the class including Pets at Home, Stevenage Dog Watch, as well as parents and family members who have told us about their jobs, trained us in first aid and brought in babies or pets for us to meet.

Year 1

Class 1 times are 8.50am – 3.15pm

PE takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please ensure your children have their PE kit in school.

Reading

We use the ‘Letter and Sounds’ and phonics schemes and Collins Big Cat, Oxford Reading Tree and Pearson Bug Club reading schemes.

We will look at stories with familiar settings, non-fiction reports, diary writing, letters and poetry based on the senses.

Home learning is given out in the form of a grid of topic-related activities each half term. It is expected that the children will complete at least one activity a week and return evidence of this to school each Wednesday.

Expectations

It is hugely important that the children read aloud regularly at home. Children should be reading for approximately 10 minutes each evening. If they have completed their school reading book, please feel free to read other books with your child. It is important that they have the chance to read books that they are interested in e.g non-fiction, poetry and magazines as well. Children are encouraged to become more independent in Year 1 and may change their own reading books as soon as they have finished them. The children are reminded each day to change their book during morning snack time. We would be grateful if you could either comment or sign the reading record to let us know you have read with your child.

Our P.E. days are Tuesday and Thursday, children will need suitable P.E. kit for both indoors and outside.
