At Broom Barns, Design and Technology is an exciting and inspiring subject that encourages children to use their creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills to design and make products for a real purpose. We believe that Design and Technology provides valuable opportunities for children to become innovative thinkers, enabling them to develop practical skills while learning how design and technology influence the world around them.
Through engaging and hands-on learning experiences, pupils investigate existing products, explore a range of materials and techniques, and develop the confidence to design, create and evaluate their own products. Children are encouraged to think critically about the needs of users, consider how products can be improved and understand how technology has evolved to meet the changing needs of society.
Our curriculum follows a progressive sequence of learning from EYFS through to Year 6, ensuring that children continually build upon prior knowledge and skills. Using the PlanBee scheme of work, pupils experience a rich variety of projects that develop their understanding of structures, mechanisms, textiles, food technology and electrical systems, while making meaningful links to other curriculum subjects such as science, mathematics, computing and art.
Design and Technology at Broom Barns promotes resilience, collaboration and independence. Children learn that successful design often involves adapting ideas, overcoming challenges and evaluating outcomes. They are encouraged to take risks, learn from mistakes and reflect on their work to make improvements. Throughout their learning journey, pupils develop the ability to communicate ideas effectively, work as part of a team and apply their knowledge in practical and purposeful ways.
By the time they leave Broom Barns, our pupils have developed a strong understanding of the design process and the role that innovation plays in everyday life. They leave equipped with a range of transferable skills, including creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and practical capability, which will support them in their future education and prepare them for life in an increasingly technological and rapidly changing world.
